Personal Learning Space
Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006Ok - kicked back into life again after a long period of head down tail up …
Following up on Derek's comments about LMSs, etc. I have hacked around his diagram of the learner centred online learning environment a little. I think it really needs the inclusion of a community learning space as well as a personal learning space. Although the items on the left represent the community/social type tools, there is also the possibility for a learner to be involved in their own discreet learning communities via the likes of Elgg, etc.
I agree with some of the other comments on Derek's article that perhaps the personal learning space is represented by some sort of browser app, but is more likely a combination of existing desktop tools, office app, email, etc. with some sort of browser app used to make the links between incoming feeds, and publishing out to both personal, course lms, and community learning platforms. Some people have suggested this could be a modification of firefox, or a mozilla plugin, and perhaps Flock goes some of the way towards this. I personally would like to see it more as an ajax app so it is cross browser compatible. How much of this app is local, and how much is linked to some online host is one of the big questions.
Here is my take on the diagram
